I, Llawella Lewis, am a Melbourne based artist who works primarily in sculpture and installation. My work is inspired by the nostalgia I have for the architectural features and structures of houses and their surrounds that I have lived in throughout my life. The suburban block of my current Thornbury house, the retro carpet pattern, the Art Deco ceiling rose of my childhood bedroom, the hills hoist clothes line and the generic screen door pattern I have come to recognize in many houses all form the basis of my sculptural reconstructions. Recent artworks are meticulously constructed in either tracing paper or drafting film and polyester thread using processes of cutting, folding, weaving, scoring, interlocking and sewing. My work pays homage to the many places I’ve called home from childhood to the present.
